Interviewing 101
August 26, 2010 by Mary Beth Maddox
Interviews can be tough! Plus, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. So, once you have been lucky enought to land an interview at an employer that interests you, it is well worth a little extra effort. When preparing to go on an interview, there are some definite steps that you should take to increase the chances of landing an offer. Let me walk you through my interview checklist::
Step 1...Before you arrive
Make sure you know how to get there and how long it will take you so you are not late
Dress appropriately...conservative is key
Find out what you can about the Company in advance
Step 2.....When you arrive
Be very nice to everyone you meet; not just the interviewer
Do not take in your cell phone or blackberry
Maintain good posture and eye contact
Speak clearly
Smile and be optimistic
Always provide a clean copy of your resume even if they already have one
Step 3....Answering Interview Questions
Always tell the truth
Be as specific as possible with your answers
Keep the topics relevant to your work history
Tell what you have learned from bad experiences (turning a negative in to a positive)
Follow the interviewer's lead
Step 4....Final Thoughts
Always ask questions if given the chance....failure to do so shows a lack of interest
Ask about the next step
Thank them for their time
Confirm your interest level
Send a hand written thank you card....an email is okay but a hand written card will be more memorable
Well, that is it. If you folllow, these steps, you should do great. Good luck out there!
